The role of Mediterranean ports in the European transport networks
The “land bridge” between the two seas, the Adriatic and the Tyrrhenian Sea, represents a great opportunity for economic development within the Euro-Mediterranean corridor connecting Spain and the Balkans through the port of Civitavecchia and those insisting on the Central Adriatic.
The Barcelona-Civitavecchia-Adriatic-Croatia axis, as well as the development of Inland Terminals and important land bridges, has the great advantage of reducing travel times with respect to road traffic and of promoting a more sustainable transport mode with emissions reduction in the atmosphere.
Hence the need to cooperate between the Port Authority of the Tyrrhenian North Sea (Ports of Rome and Lazio) and the Port Authority of the Central Adriatic Sea (Ports of Abruzzo and Marche) in order to enhance the land-bridges connecting corridors between the two coasts.
The two Port Authorities, in fact, are working towards a common strategy and take the development opportunities that can arise from a cross-link between Abruzzo, Lazio, Marche and Umbria.
This topic will be discussed next November 24 in Civitavecchia during an international conference on “The role of Mediterranean ports in the European transport networks”, which will be attended by a panel of high-level representatives.
In addition to the Presidents of the two Port System Authorities, Mr Francesco Maria di Majo and Mr Rodolfo Giampieri, the following speakers will attend the event: the Vice-President of the European Parliament, Mr David Sassoli, the Deputy Italian Minister of Infrastructure and Transports, Mr Riccardo Nencini, the Atlantic Core Network Corridor Coordinator of the European Commission, Mr Carlo Secchi, the Croatian Ambassador in Italy, the Director of Rete Autostrade Mediterranee Spa Francesco Benevolo, Mr Jasen Mezic, the Presidents of the Regions Lazio, Abruzzo and Marche, the General Director of the Port Authority of Barcelona, Mr Santiago Garcia Mila ‘, as well as the most important representatives of the shipping world such as Guido Grimaldi of Grimaldi Group and Matteo Catani, CEO of Grandi Navi Veloci.
