In 2015 RAM Logistica Infrastrutture e Trasporti Spa was designated National Short Sea Shipping Promotion Center (SPC Italy) by the Italian Ministry of Sustainable Infrastructures and Mobility with the goal of becoming a landmark in the promotion of Short Sea Shipping (SSS) for ports, shipowners and the road haulers sector.
National SSS promotion centers were created by the European Commission in 1999 in order to promote SSS in the member states.
The European Shortsea Network (ESN) includes all SPCs in the EU with the goal of coordinating their activities and promoting SSS through the involvement of the main international stakeholders.
In January 2022 SPC Italy started its yearly ESN Presidency, which focuses on the development of SSS looking towards 2027, with the goal of revitalizing the discussions on the future of SSS within the ESN, outlining its role in the framework of the challenges that SSS needs to face in order to comply with the numerous requirements of the Green Deal and of the European Commissions’ Sustainable and smart Mobility while maintaining its competitivity.
In the framework of the Italian ESN 2022 Presidency a series of events have been organized, among which, 2 webinars:
1) The importance of eco incentives for SSS and the maritime sector (25/05/2022);
2) Digitalization and environmental sustainability as drivers in the change of SSS (25/07/2022).
On the basis of the results and the outcomes of the above mentioned events, the ESN elaborated the position paper “SSS 2027 - Challenges and opportunities”, which will be presented during the Naples Shipping Week (Naples, 29/09/2022) within the Conference “Shortsea Shipping: Challenges and Opportunities towards 2027” , organized by RAM Spa - SPC ITALY, with the goal of promoting a debate on the decarbonization and digitalization processes of the transport and logistics system and on the evolution of the geopolitical scenarios in Europe and the Mediterranean area. Representatives of national and EU Institutions and stakeholders will discuss the policies, programmes, funding opportunities and future scenarios of Short Sea Shipping in Europe.
